Supporting people with mental health conditions

An article was published on the 20th of April 2020 by the Nursing Times looking at the role nurse’s play in smoking cessation. The key points of this article show that the health and wellbeing of people with mental health conditions is greatly reduced by disproportionately high rates of smoking. Also, if patients stop smoking this can enable the dosage of some psychotropic medications to be reduced. The conclusion for nurses is that advance care plans in case of a hospital admission should include tobacco dependence treatment for patients who smoke. There is growing evidence of the negative effect to a person’s mental and physical wellbeing due to smoking. More needs to be done to raise awareness amongst mental health professionals to provide patients who smoke with a stop smoking plan. For the full article click on the button below.
